Nintendo Tops Both Publishers And Systems List Of Top 1,000 Best-Selling Games Of 2014 In Japan, Next Gen Sells Badly There

In contrast to worries of Nintendo’s performance this year, a list by Media Create has indicated that Nintendo had a fantastic 2014 as they not only have topped publisher sales of the 1,000 best selling games of 2014 in Japan but also the systems they were on.

Out of the top games of Japan, Nintendo published 18.27% of them. This sets them out clear ahead of Level 5 (14.57%) and Bandai Namco Games (11.58%). Meanwhile, the most popular system for the best-selling games in Japan of 2014 was the 3DS which dominated the market at 54.32%, far ahead of the runners up: PS3 (17.44%) and PSP Vita (11.76%).

Perhaps also interestingly is how poorly next-gen consoles seem to be doing in Japan, with the WiiU at 6.57%, PS4 at 5.67 and the X-Box One at an abysmal 0.22%. Although considering PS4 came out there in early 2014 and the X-Box One in late 2014, it is expected really. This would explain why games like Persona 5 are getting both a PS3 and PS4 release, as new releases of games onto previous-gen consoles are unheard of in the West.

MarioJapan

While hearing a statistic of how well something did in a specific country may feel like no news at all on the surface, games series have died or flourished due to their performance in Japan solely. The Zero Escape series (Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward being known as factually the best written game ever created and contrary opinions are heresy and lies of the most criminal degree) went into development hell due to incredibly poor sales in Japan, despite doing well in North America and Europe. A sequel was recently announced when the NA publisher Aksys Games offered to publish it, with only announcements of releases in North America and Europe currently.
