Flashback Friday – War Gods

It’s time to introduce an idea of mine. I’ve always liked to go back into the past and remember what I played in the past and what I loved about them. Today’s game?

Yes.. This game holds a very special place in my heart because it was a guilty pleasure of mine to play this game. Yes, it wasn’t a great game, but I loved the cheesiness of it all.

The entire plot of the game.

The entire plot of the game.

OK, what made this game so cheesy?

It’s basically the most blatant Mortal Kombat ripoff out there… largely because it was made by the same company that made Mortal Kombat! You see, this game was a prototype for a planned Mortal Kombat game. Somehow, it did well enough to give the green light for Mortal Kombat 4.

It was billed as ‘True 3D fighting’ although other series like Tekken, Soul Blade and Star Gladiator were farther ahead of it’s time then this game.

What about characters? I’m sure they had great ideas for characters, right?

Anubis' Bio AKA proof that Pray for Death wasn't the only bad fighter he got slapped with

Ahau Kin's bio AKA the great-great-great-GREAT grandfather of Kotal Kahn

Sort of… You get good ideas like Anubis and Ahau Kin.

And then you get the scantly clad females…Vallah and Pagan

Now that you had your fun, what about gameplay?

Good thing you asked, disembodied voice. I have some game play right here.

Think of the arena like a cage and you fight inside this cage. You can move in three directions and you have the traditional Midway set up of four buttons and a block button. There’s also a 3D button that is used for movement as well. Every character has special moves (and everyone has at least one ‘capture’ move.. hell, Voodoo has a snake version of Scorpion’s spear).

Each character also has a combo system that is very reminiscent of the Tekken series. 10 hits, different buttons… and only the CPU can consistently do the combo. Yes, being a Midway game means the AI is going to hit you and hit hard. Expect plenty of time in dealing with these fools.

Bosses… bosses. Come on, there’s got to be some bosses here, right?

Yes. There’s two of them. One of them is Grox… goofy name, but he is a nightmarish sight to behold. Imagine one of the Ninja Turtles deciding ‘You know what? I’m tired of being a ninja and kicking Foot Clan ass. Just let me eat pizza, get fat and put on a black thong.’

*in his best Damien Sandow voice* You’re Welcome.

The final boss is Exor. Again, goofy name… but he does look imposing… well, as imposing as a 7 foot tall living piece of ivy from Wrigley Field can be. He has all sorts of tricks… but, this is his best trick:

That has to be the creepiest Porky Pig outro ever done.

That has to be the creepiest Porky Pig outro ever done.

Once you beat him and get the Ore.. you’re treated to a ‘wonderful’ ending.

Hold it! It’s a Midway game and a Mortal Kombat ripoff… so that means…

Yes! You get Fatalities! Some are great and some are ‘meh’ at best. Also gotta love the voice overdoing it for the finisher.

Anyways, thanks for going back in time with me on Flashback Friday. I hope you join me once again next week.

Not only do I remember this game, I still have it, the N64 port because it’s more common and I like the N64 graphics better.

I also remember that it got critically panned. They said it was the fighting game that proves there is no god. And that the characters were cheesy. Kabugi Jo was apparently the god of trailer trash, lol. My friend and I even make jokes about the one liners. I love Kabugi’s ONAMADUNDEYAH! and Maximu’s I kill you and take your power!.

Such a terrible game, but in a good way.

One thing that was cool about this game though was that they tried to bring the realistic looking sprites from MK 1-3 to 3D, I remember that they used actors again and it looked relative good in the arcades for its time..but not in the home versions :-)

I always wished that Midway or NRS would go back to that attempt and develope a new fighting game with characters that don’t look like shiny action figures (PS2 era) and more like real humans again.

I didn’t have the chance to play this one until I learned about emulators, but it was nice for what it was. One of my favorites were Mace: The Dark Age.

Oh, I had this one. Still do, really. And I still play some PSX stuff, though I haven’t replayed this one in a good while. I remember I had my ass handed to me more often than not ????
