I really like the May and even more the possibilities I have through this website with all those additional blog and article writing options, bringing back the “But For Me, It Was Tuesday” blog series based on the M.Bison Gimmick while it is actually about pretty great games that were released on the same date years ago will be a lot of fun and I hope that it will be informative?? for some of you.?? But enough of the talking ..its time to use ze Psycho Power and give some great games a bit spotlight! And yup..this must be weird for everyone who is reading this and does not know about my history on destructoid.
This week it’s all about the first NES TMNT, Forsaken on the Playstation, The Suffering for the PS2, and Torchlight for Steam OS X!
If there is one Non-Disney Cartoon series just everyone who grew up in the nineties remembers, its definitive TMNT , the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Michelangelo Donatello, Leonardo and Raphael. Konami created a series of awesome games for them that were a lot better than the big majority of other licensed video games at the time. TMNT was released first in Japan on the 12th May 1989, it made it to the west just a month later.
Currently we hear only bad news about Konami..just think at Silent Hills and the disaster around Hideo Kojima.?? Back in the eighties and nineties they were an almost completely different company and usually named as one of the best Japanese game developers next to Capcom and Nintendo. TMNT on the NES was an excellent action platformer of its time…games like this one are just not made anymore.
Akklaim was mostly known for their many mediocre games, including many of them based on movies or cartoon series up to the mid nineties. From around 1986 on forward they published some real gems like this one by Probe Entertainment, the guys that developed Extreme G before for the Nintendo 64.
Forsaken is an fps where the player is racing/flying through big labyrinths full with enemies ..it’s a lot like the Descent games but plays in a different setting where the player searches for treasures in these labyrinths. The Playstation version had great graphics for its time but unlike the N64 and PC versions no multiplayer options sadly due to the technical limitations.
The Suffering is my favourite game of the five I remember this week. This game series is one of the victims of Midway Games going bankrupt, it will most likely never be re-released or remade except Warner Bros which acquired the rights is all of a sudden surprising us..
This game starts like the movie From Dusk Till Dawn with a story you would expect in a typical action movie ..or game and changes abruptly when hell breaks loose and the main protagonist has to fight all kinds of super-creepy demons. That all presented in well done cutscenes, likeable characters and great monster designs. The sequel was great as well. R.I.P Midway Games
Torchlight for Max OSX, 12th May 2010 via Steam
Torchlight is a hack n slay game like Diablo..i fact it was even developed by some of the Diablo 1-2 creators and also features music by the same great composer Matt Uelmen. The game by Runic Games lets you choose between 3 classes, you get also a pet like a dog to accompany new through the dark dungeons beneath the city of Torchlight. The story itself plays only a minor role, its again all about finding better and better gear, upgrading your stats and many different abilities and have fun slashing through true hordes of monsters.
The game was a financial success and from own experiences I know that it was a lot of fun already but relative small. Torchlight got the direct sequel Torchlight II in September 2012 which had a much bigger scale and not a few people ay its seriously better than the “AAA” competition of Diablo 3. I myself never played D3 but believe that Torchlight Ii might be better already alone because the giant support of mods like Synergies that adds cool classes like a Necromancer and many new monsters and locations.
Thanks for reading, it feels damn good to write these weekly Tuesday blogs on an own website, I wonder how Hoffmanntoid will evolve in 2 years.
Did you play any of these games?
